The EFITA 2015 Conference to be held in Poznan, Poland - A challenge for EFITA 2017 in Montpellier (?)- an e-mail from Ehud Gelb

Dear EFITA “Founding Grandparents” and colleagues,

May I first apologise if I erred in an e-mail address or missed an EFITA “Founding Grandparent”…

>>> Announcement
“…The bi-annual EFITA Conferences have for the last 18 years been important events for the international community of researchers and developers within agricultural ICT, with numerous contributions of innovative applications and solutions and, not least, a scene for networking between the participants. The EFITA 2015 will by no doubts be another great occasion for presenting novel solutions for today’s challenges of carrying agricultural ICT into the age of smart online farm management…”

>>> Observation:
Technology’s State Of The Art unforgiving evolutions and relentless challenges to “innovators and agents of change” have elicited “old age wrinkles“ in our ageing EFITA.

This “last century” initiative blossomed into EFITA…
>> It’s most successful on-going newsletter (with thousands of subscribers),

>> A public domain e-book (accessed in 2014 more than 650,000 times with more than 650 annual reviews
See: http://departments.agri.huji.ac.il/economics/gelb-table.html

>> An ICT adoption Questionnaire (updated and disseminated annually since 1999
See: http://departments.agri.huji.ac.il/economics/gelb-efita-2012.pdf

and the pride of all 18 successful bi-annual EFITA Conferences!!

Even so the old age wrinkles indicate that EFITA’s content, priority refocusing and self-reflection are due. Namely in what way can EFITA retain, expand and share its founders and participants expectations, innovative initiatives and accomplishments.

Translated to agricultural ICT this suggests that this second generation seminal EFITA entity should be planted this 2015 in Poznan in order to enable it to bear fruit by 2017 in Montpellier.

EFITA 2015: Sustainable Agriculture through ICT innovation

It is a great pleasure to invite you to attend EFITA/WCCA/CIGR 2015 Conference which will take place in Poznan, Poland from June 29 to July 2, 2015.
EFITA/WCCA/CIGR 2015 is a joint conference of three associations: European Federation for Information Technology in Agriculture, Food and the Environment (EFITA), International Network for Information Technology in Agriculture – World Congress on Computers in Agriculture (INFITA – WCCA) and International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering – Technical Section VII: Information Technology (CIGR VII). All these associations deal with the use of ICT in the agri-food, bioresource and biomass sectors. These, and not only, will also be the leading topics during the conference sessions.

We hope that the Polish hospitality will make this conference truly memorable, including social and networking activities that are aimed at forging collaboration and exploring ideas through multidisciplinary approaches. It is important that professionals meet up on a regular basis to interact, network and exchange ideas and knowledge. It is only by sharing ideas that we develop new ones that catalyze technological advancement.

Hoping to see you all in Poznan,

Getting machines to communicate
As farms get larger, producers are working to maximize the labor they have available, which often means having multiple machines at work in the same field. The challenge is that when two machines are running, coordinating their autoguidance and preventing overlap can be difficult…

Drones closer to legal use
In mid-February, the Federal Aviation Administration issued proposed rules for the use of unmanned aircraft systems, opening up the proposal for a 60-day comment period that expires in April. The rules are for UAS weighing fewer than 55 pounds.

Intercomparison of UAV, Aircraft and Satellite Remote Sensing Platforms for Precision Viticulture
Precision Viticulture is experiencing substantial growth thanks to the availability of improved and cost-effective instruments and methodologies for data acquisition and analysis, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), that demonstrated to compete with traditional acquisition platforms, such as satellite and aircraft, due to low operational costs, high operational flexibility and high spatial resolution of imagery. In order to optimize the use of these technologies for precision viticulture, their technical, scientific and economic performances need to be assessed. The aim of this work is to compare NDVI surveys performed with UAV, aircraft and satellite, to assess the capability of each platform to represent the intra-vineyard vegetation spatial variability. NDVI images of two Italian vineyards were acquired simultaneously from different multi-spectral sensors on board the three platforms, and a spatial statistical framework was used to assess their degree of similarity. Moreover, the pros and cons of each technique were also assessed performing a cost analysis as a function of the scale of application. Results indicate that the different platforms provide comparable results in vineyards characterized by coarse vegetation gradients and large vegetation clusters. On the contrary, in more heterogeneous vineyards, low-resolution images fail in representing part of the intra-vineyard variability. The cost analysis showed that the adoption of UAV platform is advantageous for small areas and that a break-even point exists above five hectares; above such threshold, airborne and then satellite have lower imagery cost.

A good one… that all you IT guys will have to LOVE…
Hi Bob,
This is Alan next door. I’m sorry buddy, but I have a confession to make to you. I’ve been riddled with guilt these past few months and have been trying to pluck up the courage to tell you to your face, but I am at least now telling you in text as I can’t live with myself a moment longer without you knowing. The truth is, I have been sharing your wife, day and night when you're not around. In fact, probably more than you, particularly in the mornings after you've left for work. I haven’t been getting it at home recently, but that's no excuse I know. The temptation was just too much....I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apologies and forgive me. I promise that it won't happen again. Regards, Alan.

> The actions
Bob, feeling anguished and betrayed, immediately went into his bedroom, grabbed his gun, and without a word, shot his wife twice, killing her instantly. He returned to the lounge where he poured himself a stiff drink and sat down on the sofa. He took out his phone to respond to the neighbour's text and saw he had another message:

> The new message
Hi Bob, This is Alan next door again. Sorry about the slight typo on my last text, I expect you worked it out anyway, but as I’m sure you noticed, my predictive text changed ‘WiFi’ To ‘Wife’. Technology hey?!? Hope you saw the funny side of that. Regards, Alan.
