EFITA 2015: Sustainable Agriculture through ICT innovation

It is a great pleasure to invite you to attend EFITA/WCCA/CIGR 2015 Conference which will take place in Poznan, Poland from June 29 to July 2, 2015.
EFITA/WCCA/CIGR 2015 is a joint conference of three associations: European Federation for Information Technology in Agriculture, Food and the Environment (EFITA), International Network for Information Technology in Agriculture – World Congress on Computers in Agriculture (INFITA – WCCA) and International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering – Technical Section VII: Information Technology (CIGR VII). All these associations deal with the use of ICT in the agri-food, bioresource and biomass sectors. These, and not only, will also be the leading topics during the conference sessions.

We hope that the Polish hospitality will make this conference truly memorable, including social and networking activities that are aimed at forging collaboration and exploring ideas through multidisciplinary approaches. It is important that professionals meet up on a regular basis to interact, network and exchange ideas and knowledge. It is only by sharing ideas that we develop new ones that catalyze technological advancement.

Hoping to see you all in Poznan,

In Charleston, President Obama Honors the Life of Pastor and State Senator Clementa Pinckney
We are here today to remember a man of God who lived by faith. A man who believed in things not seen. A man who believed there were better days ahead, off in the distance. A man of service who persevered, knowing full well he would not receive all those things he was promised, because he believed his efforts would deliver a better life for those who followed.
President Obama, on the late Rev. Clementa Pinckney

Agriculture Lost a True Leader: Dean Kleckner 1932-2015
He had nothing against organic farmers, especially if they found a market for their practices. Yet he also observed that there’s no such thing as “inorganic farming”—and insisted that farmers need cutting-edge technologies if they’re going to feed a growing world with healthy and delicious food.
(…/…)
Something tells me that when Dean reached Heaven’s gates last week, Peter greeted him with a smile and a question: “So how are the corn and beans in Iowa this year?

High-Throughput 3-D Monitoring of Agricultural-Tree Plantations with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Technology
The geometric features of agricultural trees such as canopy area, tree height and crown volume provide useful information about plantation status and crop production. However, these variables are mostly estimated after a time-consuming and hard field work and applying equations that treat the trees as geometric solids, which produce inconsistent results. As an alternative, this work presents an innovative procedure for computing the 3-dimensional geometric features of individual trees and tree-rows by applying two consecutive phases: 1) generation of Digital Surface Models with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology and 2) use of object-based image analysis techniques. Our UAV-based procedure produced successful results both in single-tree and in tree-row plantations, reporting up to 97% accuracy on area quantification and minimal deviations compared to in-field estimations of tree heights and crown volumes. The maps generated could be used to understand the linkages between tree grown and field-related factors or to optimize crop management operations in the context of precision agriculture with relevant agro-environmental implications.

Monsanto sells deal of future innovation by Kurt Lawton
Its proposed buyout of Syngenta aims to deliver benefits to farmers and shareholders. Since Syngenta chose to take Monsanto’s private buyout offer public, Monsanto now counters by talking to shareholders and the farm media. I recently spoke with Mike Frank, Monsanto’s global operations lead, who stated their case for the value of this Syngenta buyout.

Biopharmaceuticals booming in Germany despite GMO controversy
Modern pharmaceuticals are no longer exclusively produced in a chemicals laboratory, but are often developed using live cells. In Germany, such biopharmaceuticals are being sold and prescribed at an ever increasing rate – despite widespread scepticism over GMOs in Germany.

Retirement

Morris, an 82 year-old man, went to the doctor to get a physical.

A few days later, the doctor saw Morris walking down the street with a gorgeous young woman on his arm.

A couple of days later, the doctor spoke to Morris and said, 'You're really doing great, aren't you?'

Morris replied, 'Just doing what you said, Doc: 'Get a hot mamma and be cheerful.''

The doctor said, 'I didn't say that. I said, 'You've got a heart murmur; be careful.'
