International workshop on System Innovations, Knowledge Regimes, and Design
Practices towards Sustainable Agriculture
16-18 June 2010 - LELYSTAD, The Netherlands
The workshop has the following features:
- Intensive interactions among a limited number of participants (30-35),
mostly researchers but also some policy-makers and representative of cooperative
and professional networks.
- Participation is by invitation only on the basis of submitted abstracts
(for researchers) or known expertise.
- All papers have to be written and will be distributed prior to the meeting.
- The meeting consists of two kinds of sessions: 1) paper sessions focussing
on a theme; 2) ‘harvesting’ sessions without a paper submission. The latter
sessions aim at teasing out lessons for governance and to define a further
research agenda.
- The workshop will be held from 16-18 June 2010 and participants are expected
to arrive on the 15th.
- Local costs (hotel, subsistence) will be borne by the organisers. Funding
applications to fund travel as well are still pending. Check website for progress
on this issue.

The climate change mitigation potential of an EU farm: towards a farm-based
integrated assessment
The European Commission has recently agreed to fund an international research
project entitled ‘The climate change mitigation potential of an EU farm: towards
a farm-based integrated assessment’.
The project is being lead by the Agriculture and Environment Research Unit
at the University of Hertfordshire in the UK in collaboration with 7 partner
organisations. IMPACCT is the public face of the project and over the coming
months this project will be developing models that will aid the development
and evaluation of policy and help farmers and growers identify and adopt agricultural
practices that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase carbon sequestration.

Manners
During one of her daily classes, a teacher trying to teach good manners
asked her students the following question: "Michael, if you were on a
date having dinner with a nice young lady, how would you tell her that you
have to go to the bathroom?"
Michael said, "Just a minute I have to go pee."
The teacher responded by saying, "That would be rude and impolite."
"What about you Sherman, how would you say it?"
Sherman said, "I am sorry, but I really need to go to the bathroom. I'll
be right back."
"That's better, but it's still not very nice to say the word bathroom
at the dinner table."
And you, little Johnny, can you use your brain for once and show us your good
manners?"
"I would say: Darling, may I please be excused for a moment? I have to
shake hands with a very dear friend of mine, whom I hope to introduce you
to after dinner."
The teacher fainted…
