European Landslide Susceptibility Map (Version 1 available for download)
This newly available raster map, called ELSUS1000, shows levels of
spatial probability of landslide occurrence in EU member states and neighbouring
countries at 1 km resolution. The map has been derived through spatial
multicriteria evaluation based modelling using pan-European datasets on
slope angle, lithology, and land cover, along with over 100,000 landslide
locations. It has been produced jointly by BGR, JRC, CNRS-EOST and CNR-IRPI,
and is freely available from the European Soil Portal together with a
number of ancillary spatial datasets.

CALL FOR PAPERS - Special Issue of the international journal “Food
Chain” focusing on Contract Farming
Contract farming is an important way to coordinate linkages between
farmers and agribusiness, and has the potential for increasing the integration
of smallholders into value chains. How can farmers be assisted with legal
advice and dealing with the paperwork? How can trust be built and incentives
created for honoring contracts on both sides?
Organized by Carlos A. da Silva (FAO) and Andrew Shepherd (CTA), this
special edition will cover the conceptual, legal, empirical, policy and
impact issues associated with contract farming.
You are welcome to submit papers for consideration to Peter Fellows (Editor:
pfellows@btinternet.com).
- Short abstracts (100 words) discussing your idea for an article are
also welcome: please contact Peter Fellows or Clare Tawney (Managing Editor,
clare.tawney@practicalaction.org.uk)
- Deadline for paper submission: July 1st 2013

FAO Country Profiles and Mapping Information System
The FAO Country Profiles and Mapping Information System is a pioneering
information retrieval tool which groups the organization's vast archive
of information on its global activities in agriculture and development
in a single area and catalogues it exclusively by country.
The system offers decision-makers around the world a fast and reliable
way to access country-specific information without the need to search
individual databases
and systems. It gives added-value to FAO's vast amount of information
by providing an easy-to-use interface with particular emphasis on interactive
maps and graphics.
The site uses two distinct categories to group information based on FAO's
areas of expertise; natural resources, economics, agriculture, fisheries
and aquaculture, forestry, and technical cooperation. This is based on
FAO's corporate structure at its headquarters in Rome; and by Global issues
ranging from biotechnology to climate change and food security.
This unique corporate effort, encompassing all of FAO's departments and
areas of expertise, recognizes that the accurate delivery of material
in a timely and easy-to-use format is crucial if the lives of the world's
poor and hungry are to be changed for the better.

Rising Concentration in Agricultural Input Industries Influences New
Farm Technologies...
- Concentration in several global agricultural input industries has
risen significantly; by 2009, the largest four firms in the crop seed,
agricultural chemical, animal health, animal genetics/breeding, and farm
machinery sectors accounted for more than 50 percent of global market
sales in each sector.
- Factors influencing changes in market structure and concentration vary
by industry and include market forces, the emergence of new technologies,
and government policies.
- The largest agricultural input firms are responsible for a large and
growing share of global agricultural research and development (R&D),
and higher input prices paid by farmers partially reflect the higher quality
of inputs created through private-sector R&D.

Holy humor
During these serious and troubled times, people of all faiths should
remember these four great religious truths:
1. Muslims do not recognize Jews as God's Chosen People.
2. Jews do not recognize Jesus as the Messiah.
3. Protestants do not recognize the Pope as the leader of the Christian
world.
4. Baptists do not recognize each other at the liquor store.
