5th CAPIGI conference: connecting the future
2 – 4 April - AMSTERDAM
What links precision farming to the CAP? The 5th CAPIGI conference 2-4 April 2014 in Amsterdam provides the answer by looking at the recently published Delegated Acts (and more to come), the Climate Smart Agriculture and the Roadmap to a low-carbon economy, greening measures and other aspects of the European policies affecting the way we do farming in the future.
With a focus on geospatial technologies, data and knowledge, CAPIGI brings together experts from governments, research, industry and the agricultural sector to discuss the added value of geospatial information in the field.

>>> Keynotes by:
- Mrs Elies Lemkes – President of the largest Dutch Farmers association ZLTO;
- Corné Kempenaar – First Dutch professor of Precision Agriculture;
- Peter Pickel – Chairman of ETP on Agro Engineering and Technologies;
- Reinhard Blasi – Market Development at European Commission;
- Mrs Anne van Doorn – Senior scientist and CAP expert at Wageningen UR;
- Simon Kay – Senior Policy Officer at DG-CLIMA;

Join the conference to meet other stakeholders in the agro-geo-informatics domain, to get inspired and informed, to see what business have to offer, to take part in initiatives and innovations and to express your views on how precision farm can be linked to the CAP. And also, come to CAPIGI for the PechaKucha, the new Social Media Competition, and the launchparty of the first Sentinel satellite as part of Copernicus!

DuPont Pioneer launches whole-farm decision service
Computer-based information system helps growers make decisions using predictive analytics and the help of an agronomist. Think of it as a supercomputer in your living room--and an agronomist on the couch.
This month, DuPont Pioneer, the seed genetics business unit of DuPont, held a news conference announcing the unveil of its decision support service that crunches weather, farm and market data and pairs you up with a certified crop advisor to analyze the results.

Seed Makers Barrel Into Technology Business
Big agricultural companies say the next revolution on the farm will come from feeding data gathered by tractors and other machinery into computers that tell farmers how to increase their output of crops like corn and soybeans.
Monsanto Co., DuPont Co. and other companies are racing to roll out “prescriptive planting” technology to farmers across the U.S. who know from years of experience that tiny adjustments in planting depth or the distance between crop rows can make a big difference in revenue at harvest time.

UNIFARM project
UNIFARM coordinates a user forum to present and defend the needs of farmers in the development of GNSS applications and services. It will also serve as a new dissemination channel to increase awareness. UNIFARM brings together precision...

The majority of farmers across Europe have heard about Precision Agriculture, being a key development for the future. And in fact it is through GNSS developments that Precision Agriculture became widely accepted and popular. The agricultural machine industry nowadays expects much from this development and integrates it within their mechanization and automation systems. Manufacturers indicate that Precision Agriculture contributes significantly to increase labour and economic efficiency and improves the environmental performance of farming. Furthermore governments acknowledge Precision Agriculture as a key technology. The technology allows farmers to reduce inputs while maintaining acceptable income levels.
However within the UNIFARM project we believe that more can be done on further promoting the uptake of GNSS and increasing awareness among policymakers and potential users. Within one of the work packages we looked specifically at targeting a number European policies that could benefit from the uptake of GNSS (reaching policy goals) but also foster the uptake of GNSS related technology by users.
After analysing a number of European policies we decided to target three policies:

1. The Common Agricultural Policy;
2. The European Space Policy;
3. The Internet of Things part of Future Internet.

For each of these policies advice was given on how to stimulate the uptake of GNSS. In total five recommendations were made.

Policy advice 1: Facilitate the use of farmer generated GNSS-based geographic data as a source for accountability and mapping within the context of the CAP.
Policy advice 2: Proclaim precision agriculture as a way of resource efficient farming and accept that as an option for greening.
Policy advice 3: Stimulate the use of location as a key identifier and as an important attribute in IoT.
Policy advice 4: Set up a GNSS-signal directly useable for the agricultural sector.
Policy advice 5: Increase public awareness and manage expectations of policy makers concerning the capabilities of Galileo.

Joys of men v. women: Words

A husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day... 30,000 to a man's 15,000.

The wife replied, 'The reason has to be because we have to repeat everything to men...

The husband then turned to his wife and asked, 'What?'
