ERANET ICT-AGRI action plan 2016: a consultation
1 July – POZNAN
In 2012 ICT-AGRI published a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA). The SRA describes the main challenges, goals and solution domains of the application of ICT and robotics in the agricultural sector. An objective of the current second phase of ICT-AGRI is to produce annual Action Plans for the implementation of this SRA with suggestions for specific actions to be taken.

The ICT-AGRI 2016 Action Plan will have a focus on ‘Farm Management and Information Systems’, which is considered a main application area for ICT and robotics in agriculture and will serve for the 2016 call for projects. The farm management and information system (FMIS) is defined as the backbone system for ICT and robotic solution domains. FMIS provides a common user interface across solution domains as well as a repository for farm information (fields, crops, buildings, facilities, inventories, animals, past operations, goals, quality measures, etc.). FMIS also includes tools for communication and information exchange with external bodies, e.g. providers, food chains and government agencies.

An efficient FMIS is based on defined agronomic information that effectively reflects agricultural production and its inherent decision-making processes. Decision support systems (DSSs) provide information for economically and environmentally appropriate farm management, and thus help the farmer in his daily work. The necessary information exchange requires interoperability between products from different vendors.

The FMIS of tomorrow will be a modular system. Farmers must be able to choose which modules or services they want to use. Some of the services will be available for free, whilst others will require subscriptions. These services need to work together, integrate and interoperate as one transparent FMIS. A desktop client could synchronize the online and desktop databases in order to integrate all necessary services. The interoperability of common software components, however, can only be achieved when research institutions, end-users and manufacturers are prepared to work together (to co-create or co-innovate). The involved parties must agree on certain (open) standards (process models, information models and semantics, messages, code lists, etc.) and overcome problems of information privacy and the reluctance to share information, as well as social and cultural barriers.

EFITA 2015: Sustainable Agriculture through ICT innovation

It is a great pleasure to invite you to attend EFITA/WCCA/CIGR 2015 Conference which will take place in Poznan, Poland from June 29 to July 2, 2015.
EFITA/WCCA/CIGR 2015 is a joint conference of three associations: European Federation for Information Technology in Agriculture, Food and the Environment (EFITA), International Network for Information Technology in Agriculture – World Congress on Computers in Agriculture (INFITA – WCCA) and International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering – Technical Section VII: Information Technology (CIGR VII). All these associations deal with the use of ICT in the agri-food, bioresource and biomass sectors. These, and not only, will also be the leading topics during the conference sessions.

We hope that the Polish hospitality will make this conference truly memorable, including social and networking activities that are aimed at forging collaboration and exploring ideas through multidisciplinary approaches. It is important that professionals meet up on a regular basis to interact, network and exchange ideas and knowledge. It is only by sharing ideas that we develop new ones that catalyze technological advancement.

Hoping to see you all in Poznan,

Mobile apps to use on the farm this spring
> Extreme Beans: One calculator calculates optimal seeding rate. You choose region, cost per 140,000 seeds and the price you pay per bushel sold. The calculator offers the seeding rate for max return, 99% return and 95% return.
The other calculator in the app offers input breakeven costs. In this calculator, you input the average price of your soybean sales per bushel, then estimate costs of seed, nutrients, seed treatments, inoculant, fungicide, fertilizer, insecticide and other products. The results calculate the bushels required to pay for the extra inputs used.

> Fertilizer Cost Application: Fertilizer cost calculator estimates the value of nitrogen per unit of phosphorus source, along with the cost per unit of P2O5 with our without nitrogen value. All costs are based on user-entered cost per bulk.

> TankMix: Calculate the amount of product needed to treat a specific field area, or calculate for tank size. You can also calculate amount of water needed or amount of product to get a specific volume-to-volume ratio.

> Corn planting calculator: Users select desired population, cost per acre, seed counts and spacing. The app then calculates the cost per acre for that crop.

> SpraySelect: Select the right nozzle for your spraying application with this app from TeeJet. Input ground speed, spacing and target rate to see the proper nozzle for your application.

> FarmLogs: See rain on fields, track field operations and get crop history on the go.

> Planting population calculator: This calculator helps determine plant population and stands for your fields.

> Growing Degree Days: Track growing degree days on your farm.

> Refuge calculator: To follow refuge guidelines, use this calculator. Select your county, choose your seed and input acres, bags of seed, etc. There are also diagrams for refuge locations.

> Farm at Hand: his cloud-based app lets farmers track field details and operations (including planting, spraying, etc.), equipment, crops in storage, contracts and deliveries.

> Mix Tank: This app features a mix guide, mix sheets, spray logs. There is weather information with wind speed and direction available at an extra charge. The database includes herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, adjuvents and foliar nutrition.

> Fertilizer Removal by Crop: When planning fertilizer applications, check this app. Select your crop and yield goal, and it will show the amount of nutrients needed for the desired yield. You can save the results and email them, too.

> Corn N Rate Calculator
This app helps farmers select a nitrogen rate to improve profitability. Along with a calculator to find the maximum return to nitrogen, there are guidelines and nitrogen credits. Calculations can be emailed.

REVISED LIVING WILL FORM

I,…NAME and SURNAME………………………………………………………., BEING OF SOUND MIND AND BODY, DO NOT WISH TO BE KEPT ALIVE INDEFINITELY BY ARTIFICIAL MEANS.

Under no circumstances should my fate be put in the hands of pinhead partisan politicians who couldn’t pass ninth grade biology if their lives depended on it, or lawyers/doctors/hospitals interested in simply running up the bills.

If a reasonable amount of time passes, and I fail to ask for at least one of the following: an Old Fashion, a Martini, a Single Malt Scotch, a glass of Red Wine, a Steak, Fried Chicken, who’s the good-looking woman on Fox News, where’s the remote, who won the PGA Tour tournament, who is leading in NASCAR points, a bowl of ice cream, Sex or Chocolate: it should be presumed that I won’t ever get better.

When such a determination is reached, I hereby instruct my appointed person and attending physicians to pull the plug, reel in the tubes, and call it a day. At this point, it is time to call the Bag Pipers to come do their thing at my funeral, and ask all of my friends to raise their glasses to toast the good times we have had.

P.S. I also hear that in Ireland they have a Nursing Home with a Pub. The patients are happier, and they have a lot more visitors. Some of them don’t even need embalming when their time comes. If anyone knows the name of this happy place, PLEASE pass it on!
