VGI (Volunteered geographic information) and Citizen Observatories
Inspire Hack
26-30 September - BARCELONA
Current society requires easy, reliable and quick access to environmental
information published by various organizations and initiatives. The
environment questions cover many activities that produce various sorts
of data. They are connected with natural risks and hazards (e.g. floods,
forest fires), pollution and contamination of air, soil or water, degradation
of landscape (e.g. deforestation, erosion, slide processes), scientific
research (ecology, geographical sciences), historical landscape memory
(landscape ecological research), education and raising public awareness
and business activities (e.g. eco-tourism, ecological farms, ecological
food production). Local and community activities capture local knowledge
in multimedia forms including videos, photos or oral histories.
The collected information can contribute to up-to-date data. Volunteered
geographic information (VGI) is the harnessing of tools to create, assemble,
and disseminate geographic data provided voluntarily by individuals.
In the context of voluntary data collection, an important part is the
way how data are processed. An example can be Neogeography (New Age
Geography) focused on combining geotagged data (e.g. KML) with a map
interface for contextualised exploration. In Neogeography data can be
from volunteers (VGI) or from professionals and can be open or with
restricted access.
Neogeography is closely related to Application Programming Interfaces
(APIs), Web 2.0 and mapping capabilities of the geospatial web. VGI
and Citizens Observatories INSPIRE Hack will be the first hackathon
combined with a INSPIRE conference with the aim to create the space,
where those with the interest in the potential of VGI and Citizens Observatories
can meet, present their tools and components from existing projects
and discuss and explore how results, ideas and knowledge can be combined
in possible ways for new projects and for new project ideas.
VGI and Citizens Observatories INSPIRE Hack will run through the first
three days of the INSPIRE conference. There might be an option also
for continuing the hackathon for the last two days of the conference.
The first session will present projects and tools dealing with VGI Information
and Citizen Observatories namely: CITI-SENSE, COBWEB, WeSenseIt, SDI4Apps,
Open Transport Net, FOODIE The second session will present new projects
and project ideas for VGI and Citizens Observatories/Citizen Science
– in particular: SCENT - A, Ground Truth 2.0, LandSense, GROW and potentially
other ideas from the participants – where it can be seen how.

EIP-AGRI Seminar 'Data revolution
Development of ICT and sensor based technologies, procedures and
software have enormously increased the amount of data collected, and
available, in agricultural sectors and through the whole supply chain
from farm to fork.
On 22-23 June 2016, DG Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI) organised
a two-day seminar in Sofia (Bulgaria) to explore how this scenario offers
potential for new data driven business models in the agri-food sector.
“We in Brussels hear a lot about this, but we want to know what’s going
on in reality at practical level” Iman Boot from DG AGRI said in his
introductory words to the meeting.
During the seminar, which was organised in cooperation with the Institute
for Agrostrategies and Innovations in Sofia, a total of 121 participants
from 25 countries discussed and shared their different experiences and
ideas on data-driven business models, identified the enabling and hampering
conditions for those business models and found potential partners for
future cooperation. Furthermore the seminar reflected on which support
is available for instance through the rural development policy for the
data revolution in the wide agri-food sector.
“It’s very valuable to understand how organisations work in different
countries and industries and also what kinds of issues they have”, commented
one participant, while a colleague stressed the benefits of “sharing
experience on other EU countries, getting information for setting-up
OGs and networking for international partnership”.
During the seminar 43 participants presented and discussed with the
audience their own data driven business cases or ideas in a speed date
market. This session offered the presenters the chance of benefiting
from the seminar participants as sparring partners to discuss or enrich
their idea or subject, or to identify potential future collaborators.

John Deere announces software release for Operations Center (from Crop
News Weekly)
Just in time for harvest, John Deere is offering enhancements to its
Operations Center system. The upgrade adds new features including Variety
Locator, which detects the crop variety being harvested; and Harvest ID,
Cotton Maps, which make it easy to identify module locations and track
cotton quality back to where it was grown.
The system also gets Tillage Maps and Speed Maps - new data layers you
can use to analyze yield and productivity trends on your operation.
Here are more details on the upgrade:
• Variety Locator - Allows usage of Variety Locator information (documented
when planting) to enable the John Deere in-cab display in the combine
to automatically detect and document the crop variety being harvested.
• Tillage and Speed Maps - Assists in the evaluation of the performance
of tillage operations with documentation maps on target depth (GreenStar™
3 2630 Display only). Enhances insight into which variables affect yield
with speed maps for seeding and tillage operations.
• John Deere Harvest ID, Cotton Maps - Improves traceability of where
each cotton module is harvested and leads to better correlation between
input decisions and cotton quality.
• Draw Field Boundaries and Freeform Zones - Released in April, Operations
Center now allows new fields to be added by manually drawing boundaries,
which can be sent to the in-cab display as an operational boundary. Also
added to the Prescription Creator by Agrian® is the ability to create
freeform zones when building prescriptions based off of soil or harvest
maps.

Track farms year-round with new website (from Crop News Weekly)
FMC has launched Grow Forward, a fungicide website with season-long
updates from plots in 10 states. The website has information from plots
in key corn and soybean areas in the country, which is important since
FMC has gone from a few fungicides in its portfolio to a long list with
its integration of Cheminova into the mix. And many of the fungicides
are new, so the company wants to show them in action.
Fungicide plots have been established in Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, Nebraska,
Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas. The plots
will feature an early foliar application of Topguard fungicide or Preemptor
SC fungicide. Plot-specific information and updates will be posted throughout
the growing season. In addition, the company plans a series of livestream
events you can watch online.

Insight on data ownership
Jason Tatge is not
a newcomer to ag data, the founder of Farmobile has long been an advocate
that farmers should own their data, and profit from it. He's written a
fascinating blog in Tech Crunch that farmers should read. While Farm Industry
News advocates the value of aggregating data for better management,
you want to maximize the value of your data no matter where it's used.
Get Tatge's perspective.

Internet of Things is more than a fridge with pictures
So often when the general media talks about the Internet of Things,
they go right to the fridge, and Samsung does now have a refrigerator
that takes a picture of what's inside and makes it available for you to
download at the store to see what you might need (of course no one's refrigerator
is that organized). But that's now where this technology move is going.
The folks at our sister site ioti.com have a story that looks into the
fact that IoT is about to make a big shift - think smart cities, smart
manufacturing and you'll see the true value of this.
By the way, any farmer using the cloud to save/share/manage information
is playing in the Internet of Things space. If your machine is a connected
machine you're in IoT.Catch up on some of the potential benefits…

We
in France must face terrorism without losing our soul - Nathalie GOULET
After the massacre in Nice, if the republic is ever to bring its lost
children back into the fold it must resist any further suspension of civil
liberties.
(...)
France, along with many other countries, is facing the most challenging
time of its history. How do you fight against terrorism when you live
in a democracy? It is possible - and it has to be done without losing
your soul.

Excellent (very) short joke: Historical fact
Who says building a border wall won't work?
The Chinese built one over 2,000 years ago, and they still don't have
