Igls Forum 2018: 12th "International European Forum on System Dynamics and Innovation in Food Networks"
5 – 9 February - Igls, the mountainous suburb of Innsbruck, Austria.

The Forum is endorsed by EAAE (European Association of Agricultural Economists) as its 163rd seminar, by IFAMA (International Food and Agribusiness Management Association) and other scientific associations. The call for papers is enclosed. Abstract submission deadline is October 13, 2017. Abstract submission and pre-registration of participants without presentation interest is through an informal e-mail to fooddynamics@uni-bonn.de.

It is the objective of the Forum to provide an interdisciplinary and creative discussion environment that generates new ideas for innovative and multidisciplinary research dealing with management, market, consumer, policy, organization, engineering, and related domains. Participation is limited to allow for a fruitful discussion environment. We hope to meet many of you at this annual event for the intensive discussions it is known for.

You may also check the "International Journal on Food System Dynamics" at www.centmapress.org which evolved from the Forum and consider it as an outlet for your publication interests.

DroneSeed

>>> Current applications

> Spraying
DroneSeed is currently solely focused on controlling competitive vegetation. We protect trees from invasive species and noxious weeds such as Big-Leaf maple, Himalayan blackberries, and Scotch Broom. Keeping these areas viable remains a dynamic problem -we are able to help protect both precise areas as well as areas that span hundreds of acres using either one drone or swarms of coordinated drones, respectively.

>>> Future applications

> Planting
While spraying is our current sole focus, it makes planting possible by controlling competitive vegetation to give seeds the survival rates necessary to be viable. As we grow, our drone swarms can be equipped with a different module that uses compressed air to fire tree seeds into places they’ll grow well called “micro-sites.” We are able to skip manual hole digging and avoid intense work that is the equivalent of two marathons each day. Our automated equipment are also able to plant orders of magnitude faster than some of the best and fastest tree planters.

> Data acquisition
As we grow we are able to collect a lot data pertaining to the surrounding environment and underlying terrain because we have swarms of drones flying in the air with multiple cameras. We are able to package this data up into clean, concise, analytical data sets that give insight to forestry companies, helping them make better decisions about managing and harvesting their timberland.

Scientists say agriculture is good for honey bees
"We train agricultural producers on careful selection and conscientious application of pesticides to reduce bee exposure," says Scott Stewart, Integrated Pest Management Specialist with UT Extension, "but it's becoming more clear that the influences of varroa mite and food availability are more important factors in honey bee health than agricultural pesticides."

After the election of Emmanuel Macron as president of the French Republic, a funny and imaginative thought by Andy Borowitz (NYT)
On Sunday, the people of France annoyingly retained their traditional right to claim intellectual superiority over Americans, as millions of French citizens paused to enjoy just how much smarter they were than their allies across the Atlantic.
…/…
“A lot was at stake today: the future of our liberal traditions and our democracy itself,” he said. “But by far the greatest loss of all would have been our right to look down on Americans.”

“Grâce à Dieu, that has been secured!” Grimange exclaimed.

But, sitting a few tables away, Helene Commonceau, another Parisian, admitted that she did not understand what all of the celebrating was about. “We are smarter than the Americans, true, but they have set the bar very low, no?” she said.
