EFITA newsletter / 813 - European Federation for Information Technology in Agriculture, Food and the Environment

2 events: Biocontrol Africa & 16th New Ag International Conference & Exhibition
>>> Biocontrol Africa
19-20 March 2018 - NAIROBI - Kenya
>>> 16th New Ag International Conference & Exhibition
21 - 23 March 2018 - NAIROBI - Kenya
The conferences will feature speakers from academic, government and industry circles, whose aim will be to promote products and technologies that fit African conditions.

Presenters will speak about the currently available solutions, as well as sustainable and precise agriculture (including Precision Ag solutions that are being implemented in other places around the word for small holders). These innovative solutions could also help Africa to advance quickly, building capability from scratch right now, on logistics, infrastructure, government support, knowledge transfer and trading.

Vine Health Watch: an original creation in 2 days of coding during the API-AGRO Hackathon

On February 6 and 7, 2018, we participated as a competitor in the hackathon organized by API AGRO with a project with a dream team of 6 peoples from data-science and modelling dedicated to agriculture.

At the end of this great thirty-hour adventure, we proposed the Vine Health Watch service: a new tool to visualize in real time the health status of the vineyard in order to improve decision-making.
The jury will soon consider our videos of our pitch and production: we are waiting for the results will be revealed at the Paris International Agricultural Show at the end of February.

If you want to know more - in French, but google translation is a good tool ;)

ChickenBoy by Faromatics
Faromatics has launched the ChickenBoy the world-wide first roof-suspended robot that observes chickens, litter and equipment autonomously every day, all the time.
The patent-pending robot monitors air quality, health and welfare, inspects equipment operation and informs farmers, stock persons or vets via mobile alarms. The robot spends its days with the chickens and provides farmers via our secure cloud platform with direct video and audio access, in addition to data collected from the robot. Users can subscribe to customisable alarms which are sent to mobile or other devices.
The ChickenBoy helps farmers improve animal welfare and living conditions of chickens. It helps manage digestion, litter, equipment and climate better and its artificial intelligence identifies onset of illness, deceased birds and broken drinkers, making life better for chickens while saving money for farmers.

Growing a crop without a single person in the field?
Growing a crop without a single person entering the field sounds like something out of a science fiction film, but one researcher has proved it is not only possible using existing technology – it can also be done cheaply

Dutch project to boost precision farming
An interesting project will start in the Netherlands in 2018, aimed at boosting precision farming in the agricultural practice. Wageningen University & Research and farming journal Boerderij – for which I write – will solve problems facing crop growers.

Be a data shark
Use a data plan to help make decisions on the farm.
I’m not much of a billiards player but if you have ever watched a professional, you know that they run the table by constantly setting up the next shot and even two or three shots ahead. They have a master plan that they tweak shot by shot as they play.

Data: data-driven farm decisions
Transition to data-driven decisions on the farm…
While visual observations are helpful, using data to make decisions can challenge your thinking.

How precision technology has upped planting speed and accuracy
Imagine a planter that can work up to 50% faster, achieves top-rate singulation and in-row spacing, works from prescription maps to vary plant population, and stops and starts planting at headlands – even on an angle – with uncanny precision.

Then imagine a planter that can select different varieties for different zones across the field to provide optimum traits for different situations and you have a picture in your head of the ultimate course of precision planting technology.

Definition of "old"

#1
I very quietly confided to my best friend that I was having an affair.
She turned to me and asked, "Are you having it catered?"
And that, my friend, is the sad definition of "OLD".

#2
Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked,
"How old was your husband?"
"98," she replied: "Two years older than me"
"So you're 96," the undertaker commented.
She responded, "Hardly worth going home, is it?"

#3
Reporters interviewing a 104-year-old woman:
"And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?" the reporter asked.
She simply replied, "No peer pressure."

#4
I've sure gotten old!
I have outlived my feet and my teeth,
I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement,
New knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes I'm half blind,
Can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine,
Take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts.
Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation;
Hardly feel my hands and feet anymore.
Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92.
Have lost all my friends. But, thank God,
I still have my driver's license.

#5
I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape,
So I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising.
I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors.
I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

#6
An elderly woman decided to prepare her will and told her preacher she had two final requests.
First, she wanted to be cremated, and second, she wanted her ashes scattered over Wal-Mart.
"Wal-Mart?" the preacher exclaimed.
"Why Wal-Mart?"
"Then I'll be sure my daughters visit me twice a week."

#7
My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.
Also, my memory's not as sharp as it used to be.

#8
Know how to prevent sagging?
Just eat till the wrinkles fill out.

#9
It's scary when you start making the same noises, as your coffee maker.

#10
These days about half the stuff in my shopping cart says, 'For fast relief.'

#11
THE SENILITY PRAYER:
Grant me the senility to forget the people
I never liked anyway,
The good fortune to run into the ones I do,
And the eyesight to tell the difference.
