100 years ago: the first jazz concert in Europe by US soldiers (in Nantes, France)
The orchestra of the 369th American Infantry regiment was credited as playing "one of the first jazz concerts in France"

The city of Nantes has held a concert in honour of one of the first ever jazz concerts in Europe, played by the 369th American Infantry regiment, exactly 100 years ago.

A “concert of the century” was held at the Théâtre Graslin in Nantes (Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire) this week (Monday February 12) to celebrate the centenary, following a ceremony in the event’s honour, and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.

Geneviève Darrieussecq, secretary of state to the minister for Armed Forces, attended the “100 Years of Jazz” event, along with three granddaughters of the leader of the regiment and the orchestra, Lieutenant James Reese Europe, explains newspaper Le Monde.

Q&A: DowDuPont CTO Neal Gutterson Discusses Public Perception of Gene Editing and Digital Strategy After Granular Acquisition
.../...
Obviously, Dupont’s acquisition of Granular made big waves in the agtech scene. What are you hearing from customers about their desires around digital services?

That’s a great question. Our customers, if you think about them broadly and globally, are in very different stages of digital adoption in different parts of the world. But I think the most fundamental issue is really simplifying their lives. If you look at the history of major products and technology changes over the last 20, 30 years, often it’s simplicity and convenience that drives most value. Granular offers farmers a way to better understand the total management system of their farm, using simple and convenient software products.

I think farmers are inundated with complexity today. We know that a typical farmer in North America has a series of 50 to 60 decisions they need to make in the growing season, and throughout the year as they plan for the next growing season. And each of those decisions has an impact on profitability, it may have an impact on the environment, and I think there’s a real desire for tools that help them better understand where real profitability comes from.

Telefónica and FAO will promote digitalization initiatives to improve the agricultural sector and access to information in rural communities
The framework agreement reached between both organizations was signed today in Rome by José Graziano da Silva, General Director of the FAO, and Trinidad Jiménez, Global Director of Public Affairs Strategy of Telefónica.

The alliance, valid on a first phase until 2021, revolves around three initial lines of action: IoT solutions applied to the agricultural sector; Big Data and data analysis to create early prevention systems; and Digital Education and specific training.

Better dialogue needed to help bridge divide with farming's critics (NZ)
.../...
So, we will continue to milk the cows and grow the crops to feed the population until we can reach the level of self-righteousness that I recently read in an overseas forum.

Here, the writer said: "Hunters should be ashamed of themselves … they should get their meat from the supermarket where no animals were ever harmed".

This may be a long process.

My friend Cyndi thought you might enjoy this...

8:00 - I made a snowman.

8:10 - A feminist passed by and asked me why I didn’t make a snow woman.

8:15 - So, I made a snow woman.

8:17 - The nanny of the neighbors complained about the snow woman's voluptuous chest.

8:20 - The gay couple living nearby grumbled that it could have been two snowmen instead.

8:25 - The vegans at No. 12 complained about the carrot nose, as veggies are food and not to decorate snow figures with.

8:28 - I am being called a racist because the snow couple is white.

8:31 - The Muslim gent across the road wants the snow woman to wear a headscarf.

8:40 - Someone calls the cops who show up to see what’s going on.

8:42 I - am told that the broomstick of the snowman needs to be removed because it could be used as a deadly weapon. Things get worse after I mutter: "Yeah, if it's up your ass"

8:52 - My phone is seized and thoroughly checked while I am being blindfolded and flown to the police station in a helicopter.

9:00 - I'm on the news as a suspected terrorist bent on stirring up trouble during this difficult weather.

9:10 - I am asked if I have any accomplices.

9:29 - A little known jihadist group has claimed it was their plot.

Moral of this, stay home when it's this cold.
