OpenPD is a mobile app that provides an on-the-field and on-the-fly system for fast identification of plant pests and diseases. It is easy to use, based on open community and peer learning, supported by European funded ICT frameworks and our development. At our event two weeks ago, we covered several topics including agricultural exports, the convergence of food and health, the rise of alternative proteins, and the potential of indoor farming. These are my five key takeaways from the discussions of the week. It will take time to refine augmented intelligence systems for agriculture so that they are readily accessible and fit in the pocket. Such a tool could never be as cool as an armored suit that can fly, but the ability to outperform the competition through science is the only superpower most farmers will ever need. To make incomes comparable across countries and time, daily income is measured in constant International Dollars (int-$). The distribution of incomes is shown at 3 points in time. - In 1800 the majority of the world lived in poverty, with incomes similar to the poorest countries in Africa today. Our data entry on global poverty shows that in 1820 between 85% and 95% of the world lived in absolute poverty. - By 1975, 175 years later, the world had changed substantially—it was much more unequal. As we can see in the chart below, the world income distribution became 'bimodal': it had the shape of a camel. The world was divided into a poor developing world and a 10-times richer developed world. - Over the following 3 decades, the world income distribution again changed dramatically. The poorer countries, especially in South-East Asia, started catching up. The two-humped camel shape changed into a one-humped 'dromedary' shape. World income inequality declined, and the distribution shifted to the right. Compared to 1975, the world has become richer and less unequal. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later. The woman said, 'Unbutton your shirt'. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair. She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me' and she processed my Social Security application. When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office. She said, 'You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability too.' And then the fight started
