IoF2020 (Internet of Food and Farm 2020)

IoF2020 fosters the large-scale uptake of IoT technologies in the European food and farming sector. With €30-million co-funded by the EU, the project has the potential to drastically improve the sustainability and productivity of the European farming and food sector, while demonstrating the added value of smart webs of the connected objects in 33 use cases, covering 5 trials (e.g. arable crop, dairy, meat, vegetables and fruits) throughout Europe.

> Vegetables Trial Update 2019
Solving unexpected challenges through constant improvement is at the heart of our project. Due to this guiding principle, several of our vegetables use cases have their products up and running now. The next steps are to further refine these innovations, attract potential users and explore the opportunities to expand the technologies to use cases in other sectors. This status update gives you an overview of what’s happening in our vegetables trial, through various articles and interviews. Among them are:

- A foreword by Manuel Berenguel, Technology Chair of the Vegetables Trial;
- An interview with Cristina Micheloni, Ecosystem Chair of the Vegetables Trial;
- An article dedicated to new breeding techniques and crop optimisation;
- Updates from our use cases in other trials.

France, world seed market leader

France is global leader in seed trade export with over EUR 3,3 billion seeds and nursery plants in the 2017-2018 campaign. European leader in varieties registration and seed production area, France has managed to keep a key role in the world seed market over the years. What are the main characteristics of this success? Surely having the greatest arable surface in Europe and being a country of food industry excellence helps. Also, France benefits from an honorable plant research and seed breeding historical background.

Vegetarian diet is not that good for you…

Nutrition and Health – The Association between Eating Behavior and Various Health Parameters: A Matched Sample Study (2014), Nathalie T. Burkert, Johanna Muckenhuber, Franziska Großschädl, Éva Rásky, Wolfgang Freidl

Our results revealed that a vegetarian diet is related to a lower BMI (body mass index) and less frequent alcohol consumption. Moreover, our results showed that a vegetarian diet is associated with poorer health (higher incidences of cancer, allergies, and mental health disorders), a higher need for health care, and poorer quality of life. Therefore, public health programs are needed in order to reduce the health risk due to nutritional factors.

In Catholic schools, students are taught that lying is a sin. Jesuit instructors are also advised that a bit of imagination is OK to express the truth differently without lying

This is a perfect example of this teaching the truth: getting a hair dryer thru U.S. customs.

An attractive young woman on a flight from Ireland asked the priest beside her, "Father, may I ask a favor of you?"

"Of course child. What can I do for you?"

"I bought my mother an expensive hair dryer for her birthday. It is unopened, but well over the customs limits and I'm afraid they'll confiscate it. Is there any way you could carry it through customs for me? Could you possibly hide it under your robes for me?"

"I would love to help you my dear; but, I must warn you, I will not lie!"

"With your honest face, Father, I'm sure no one will question you!"

When they got to customs, she let the priest go first. The official asked, "Father, do you have anything to declare?"

"From the top of my head down to my waist, I have nothing to declare."
The official thought this answer a little strange, so he asked, "And what do you have to declare from your waist down to the floor?"

"I have a marvellous instrument that has been designed for use on women, but which, to-date, remains unused."

Roaring with laughter, the Customs Officer said, "Go ahead, Father. Next, please!"
