10 key takeaways about public opinion in Europe 30 years after the fall of communism

Across the board, Europeans are much more satisfied with their own lives than they were in 1991. The improvement has been especially dramatic in Central and Eastern European countries. For example, in 1991, only 12% in Poland rated their life satisfaction at 7 or higher on a 10-point scale. In the new survey, 56% rate their lives at 7 or higher. There has also been a dramatic increase in life satisfaction in Germany since 1991 – but much more so among people living in former East Germany than among those living in the former West.

Industry and farmers expect ‘science-based’ solutions to deliver New Green Deal, by Sarantis Michalopoulos and Natasha Foote

The agri-food industry and EU farmers are calling for clarity and science-based solutions to meet their objectives as part of the EU’s recently announced European Green Deal.

The new plans, combined with the ‘Farm to Fork’ strategy and a reformed Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), aims to transform Europe’s agricultural sector, ensuring food security while preserving environmental and human health and working to make the EU carbon neutral.

In a recent op-ed for EURACTIV, Luc Triangle, general-secretary of industriAll Europe, said that this transition to climate neutrality will bring “significant opportunities, such as the potential for economic growth, new business models, new forms of working and technological development” and that advanced research, innovation and development policies will have to play a key role.

How Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence pave the way to climate neutrality

Calls for action on the climate emergency have reached a crescendo with the COP25 in Madrid. It is good to see the new Commission re-claiming EU’s leadership in climate technology with the Green Deal presented this Wednesday. But for a faster energy transition, it is not enough just to have more renewables, writes Hanno Schoklitsch.

Good old days (??????): Le Récolte des Foins a Eragny by Camille Pissarro

Get back in line! (old good story)

This happened at a New York Airport. This is hilarious - I love the guts of this girl!

An award should go to the United Airlines gate agent in New York for being smart and funny, while making her point, when confronted with a passenger who probably deserved to fly as cargo. For all of you out there who have had to deal with an irate customer, this one is for you.

A crowded United Airlines flight was cancelled.

A single agent was re-booking a long line of inconvenienced travellers.

Suddenly, an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket on the counter and said, "I HAVE to be on this flight, and it has to be FIRST CLASS."

The agent replied, "I'm sorry, sir. I'll be happy to try to help you, but I've got to help these folks first; and then I'm sure we'll be able to work something out."

The passenger was unimpressed.

He asked loudly, so that the passengers behind him could hear, "DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO I AM?"

Without hesitating, the agent smiled and grabbed her public address microphone. "May I have your attention, please?", she began, her voice heard clearly throughout the terminal.

"We have a passenger here at Gate 14 WHO DOES NOT KNOW WHO HE IS.

If anyone can help him with his identity, please come to Gate 14." With the folks behind him in line laughing hysterically, the man glared at the United Airlines agent, gritted his teeth, and said, "F*** You!" Without flinching, she smiled and said, "I'm sorry sir, you'll have to get in line for that, too."

Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain.
