See bbc.com Emmanuel Macron, pilloried at home and abroad, is Europe’s best hope, by Simon Tisdall As nations around the world fall to populist leaders, France’s president is busy seeking a lonely mandate. .../... In a cynical modern world that prioritises national self-interest, disrespects individual rights, and fails to tackle rising inequality, digital dictatorships, and environmental degradation, the odds are stacked against him. Yet with his quaint, almost old-fashioned ideas of solidarity and human betterment, Macron may be Europe’s last, best hope. See theguardian.com Good old days (?????): By the Wayside, by Ralph Hedley 5G made waves at CES but has long road to relevance on-farm by Vonnie Estes 5G loomed large at CES 2020. “5G” was written in the sky Tuesday morning in Las Vegas as the show kicked off. The technology now has real-world applications and the nation’s carriers are building out their 5G networks as we speak. This fifth-generation cellular network is 10 times faster than 4G LTE. Instead of waiting five minutes to download a movie in 4G, it will take 30 seconds on 5G. In addition, to use on personal devices, 5G will have revolutionary industrial applications. Whether it’s used for vehicle-to-vehicle communication and autonomous driving, or smart appliances and smart cities, 5G is expected to usher in a host of connected devices and applications to take traffic lights, power grids, and more into the future. 3G let us text, 4G let us use Uber and stream Netflix, and 5G will give us machine-to-machine communication with no latency. What’s the role of technology in animal welfare? We ask McDonald’s Banks Baker .../... Technology does play a role and it will continue to play a bigger and bigger role. These commitments are making us look further and further back in the supply chain, in many cases, to the production level. Ways that we can track, monitor, and validate some of the progress for those commitments in a commodity level supply chain need to be advanced. At the Animal AgTech Innovation Summit, I have an interesting project I will be highlighting. McDonald’s was the first global restaurant company to come out with an outcomes-based animal health and welfare strategy for broilers (meat chickens). This is opposed to just following a specific set of parameters or protocols about how our suppliers should raise broilers. We are going to measure the actual outcomes of welfare itself. SoilBio app to help carbon capture SoilEssentials has teamed up with leading space industry engineers and soil biologists to launch a new app to help farmers cut their carbon emissions The tool we have developed, SoilBio – part of our KORE app – is a soil metric that gives an absolute repeatable reading of the functional health of the soil. Based on 4 years work and nearly 1 million data points from soils in the UK it has real pedigree. The smart thing about SoilBio is that rather than trying to directly measure soil health it uses the organisms that live in the soil to reflect the environment that they have been inhabiting. That way it is more than just a snap-shot but instead takes into account the last few years of soil management. See soilessentials.com About SoilEssentials, a small business with big ambition See soilessentials.com New tool for assessing soil health could help link payments with ecosystem services A UK farming technology company has teamed up with leading space industry engineers and soil biologists to create a new tool to accurately assess biodiversity and soil health on farms.
