agINFRA: creating a data infrastructure to support agricultural communities
agINFRA is a European innovative Integrated Infrastructure Initiative
(I3) project - launched November 2011 - that will introduce agricultural
scientific communities to the vision of open and participatory data-intensive
science. To achieve this aim, agINFRA will design and develop a scientific
data infrastructure for agricultural sciences that will facilitate the
development of policies and services that promote the sharing of data
among agricultural scientists in a manner that develops trust within
and amongst their communities.
Through the establishment of an open and interoperable data e-Infrastructure,
agINFRA will remove existing obstacles concerning sharing, processing
and accessing scientific information and data in agriculture, as well
as improve the preparedness of agricultural scientific communities to
face, manage and exploit the ever-increasing abundance of multi-disciplinary
data that is available to support agricultural research.
Ultimately, agINFRA will demonstrate how a data e-Infrastructure for
agricultural scientific communities can be set up to facilitate data
generation, provenance, quality assessment, certification, curation,
annotation, navigation and management.
>>> Goals and Objectives
The agINFRA project represents a unique opportunity for the innovation
and transfer of scientific and technological results in the agricultural
field into real outcomes that help improve scientific community-driven
policy development and service deployment for data generation, management
and sharing. The key goals and corresponding project objectives are
as follows:
> Increased sharing and federation of agricultural data
> Efficient data management in the agricultural research process
> Deployment of robust European service infrastructure for scientific
agricultural data
> High interoperability between agricultural and other data resources
>>> Partners
The agINFRA Consortium unites world-leading scientific and technical
research institutes, specialist SMES and agricultural enterprises and
NGOs, including one of the main players in the agricultural information
community - the Food & Agricultural Organisation of the UN – to
design, develop and promote a scientific data infrastructure for agricultural
sciences. Each partner brings relevant, high quality experience to the
team, ranging from major agricultural databases and in-depth data infrastructure
design and deployment skills through to first-hand domain expertise
in agricultural sciences, an extensive understanding of European project
requirements and a proven track record in training and capacity building.
Collectively, the agINFRA Consortium as whole provides a one-stop-shop
of agricultural subject matter, data repository and e-Infrastructure
expertise.

Plantwise update - new clinics start in Rwanda and Pakistan
Plantwise is bringing together a wide ranging network of international
partners to provide direct support and advice to farmers who are facing
devastating losses to plant pests and diseases.
Plantwise received funds of $28 million thanks to our two main donors
UK Department for International Development and Swiss Agency for Development
and Cooperation and others.
During 2011:
- We helped Rwanda, Peru, Suriname and Pakistan begin plant clinics
in their countries
- The number of Plantwise assisted clinics worldwide rose by 47% to
182 (with a doubling of the number of clinics in Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka
and Uganda).
We worked towards the next stage of the online Plantwise knowledge bank
which will include:
- A new diagnostic support tool. Based around images of all types of
damage and symptoms, it will assist with diagnosis and link the user
directly to factsheets with treatment recommendations
- A tailored interface for each country, which would include information
on the top crops and pests, as well as country specific treatment advice
is being developed

The fastest thing in the Universe
The top physicists from the United States, Russia and Cyprus are
delivering presentations about their findings at an international physics
convention.
First, the American top physicist goes to the podium to deliver his
speech:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, based on our findings from our latest experiments,
we have reinforced the fact that LIGHT is indeed the fastest thing in
the universe".
After an hour of presentation, presenting, among others, the various
experiments conducted in particle accelerators, the audience applauds
enthusiastically.
Then, the Russian top physicist goes to the podium to deliver his own
speech:
"Dear colleagues, I beg to differ from my American colleague and
I am here to announce that, based on our research, the human THOUGHT
is the fastest thing in the universe, and not light".
So, after 2 hours of presentation, theories and arguments with the audience,
the Russian scientist gives the floor to the top Cypriot physicist.
"Dear friends, I must disagree with both my American and Russian
colleagues, and I must state that the fastest thing in the universe
is DIARRHOEA".
The audience was shocked and angry by this statement.
"Please, allow me to explain, it's very simple: Last night while
I was sleeping in my hotel room, I woke up realising that I was sick
with diarrhoea. And then, before I could even THINK turning the LIGHT
on, I sh*tted in my bed sheets!"
