3rd EU FRESH INFO forum (ICT / Fresh produces)
29 - 30 November ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands.
Information(technology) is changing the game in Fresh Produce. This
is the central theme of the 3rd EU FRESH INFO Forum & Roundtables.
For the third time in succession, Frug I Com will organize this leading
industry event on information management, information-standardization
and information technology and development in fresh produce. The event
will take place at the SS Rotterdam.
Zoetermeer, 20 October 2016 – Information technology is changing all
industries. Disruptive technologies pave the way for new companies and
new concepts. Who would have thought that Uber would be reorganizing
the taxi-business without a single taxi or that Air BNB would be the
biggest hotel without hotel rooms. New players, new game; but what is
the impact on the game in fresh produce ?
The third edition of the EU FRESH INFO Forum takes place at the SS Rotterdam
on 29 and 30 November in close collaboration with GS1 in Europe, the
International Federation for Produce Standards (IFPS) and the Fresh
Produce Centre.
>> Morning plenary sessions
The program will start with addressing the impact of the CHANGE of the
GAME in the Fresh Produce sector. Keynote speakers will highlight the
impact that new technology has on the customer and the entire supply
chain.
>> Breakout sessions
In the breakout sessions, six themes will be addressed that are essential
for companies not to be on Gartners’ EXIT-list. Gartner predicted that
“Digital business incompetence” will cause a quarter of businesses to
lose competitive ranking in 2017.
Breakout sessions:
1. DATA QUALITY ; Together with GS1 Nederland, we go into detail on
how data quality is essential for fresh in retail supply.
2. FARM DATA ; More and more data from the farm is needed in the supply
chain. Results from the Farm Digital Research & Innovation Program
will be presented here.
3. TECHNOVATION ; Drones, robots and sensors are entering our sector:
an update on major developments.
4. LOGISTICS ; Without logistics, there will be no fruit and vegetables
on your plate. But what does the logistics of the future look like?
5. FACT DRIVEN ; BIGdata is changing the decision making process in
fresh produce: from managing with our own green fingers to model based
decisions: an update on how data is the oil of your company.
6. CAPABILITY TO CHANGE; One of the major issues is the capability needed
to change the use of new technology in a company. It requires change
of business processes, change of competences needed but also entails
the struggle with fear of the unknown. In this breakout session, special
attention will be given to this process of change and the people who
have to implement it.
>> Game over?
This will leave you with the question: should I do something or do I
need to wait? In an outlook called ‘Trendz! On to 2030 the impact on
the fresh game ’ renowned speaker Richard van Hooijdonk gives you the
unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of future trends and the impact
on fruits and vegetables.
>> Fresh Produce Centre Management Dinner
Change starts at the highest level. Digital transformation of the fresh
companies management is essential for the next generation of fresh produce.
The Management Dinner takes place on 29 November as part of the EU Forum.
During this Dinner, CEO’s of the Fresh Produce Centre members will discuss
the Change of the Game.
>> Fresh Technology Tour
On 29 November, a special tour will be organized for foreign visitors
along the most modern Dutch horticulture companies. This year, we will
visit the Urban Farm De Schilde: a hydroponics and aquaponics urban
cultivation on the roof of a disused office. For the latest developments
of logistics in the glasshouse, we will visit Ter Laak Orchids: where
every orchid has its own RFID chip!

Agricultural
Tech Investment Rises to Record $25 Billion
Investments by companies and venture capitalists in agricultural
technology reached a record of as much as $25 billion globally in 2015,
and that figure will probably grow again this year, according to a private
report.
Real-time data analytics, sensors and robots are raising the prospect
of the “next green revolution” and are spurring start-ups, according
to the report released Tuesday by Boston Consulting Group and AgFunder,
which connects investors with agricultural companies and proposals online.
The investments include research and development, deals, partnerships,
equity stakes and technology centers. Early-stage funding from venture
capital firms reached $3 billion globally, up from $900 million in 2013
and $400 million in 2010, the groups said...

Pesticide residues in food: risk to consumers remains low
Ninety-seven per cent of food samples collected in the European Union
are free of pesticide residues or contain traces that are within legal
limits. The conclusion is part of EFSA’s latest annual report on pesticide
residues in food, which analyses the results of almost 83,000 food samples
from the 28 EU Member States – including Croatia for the first time –
as well as Iceland and Norway.
Jose Tarazona, Head of EFSA’s Pesticides Unit, said: “The high compliance
rates recorded for 2014 are in line with previous years, which means that
the EU is continuing to protect consumers by controlling the presence
of pesticide residues in food.
“Our annual report is a major undertaking that is rooted in the data we
receive from Member States. It would not be possible without the commitment
and expertise of our European partners, and we thank them for their contribution.”

What are pesticides and how do they get into our food?
Pesticides play an important role in maintaining yields of agricultural
crops. However, the residues from pesticides can potentially be harmful
to humans if they get into the food we eat. A pesticides expert at EFSA
explains the measures that are in place to reduce the risks.

Bagpipe
A musician from a symphony orchestra one day ran across an old lamp at
a garage sale, took it home, washed it up, and out popped at genie.
"Thank you kind sir for releasing me from this old lamp. I regret
to say that you have encountered a poor, less powerful genie, and I can
only grant you one wish, but wish away." said the genie.
"Oh that's wonderful. I think I would really like to make a difference
in the world with my one wish.", said the musician.
He thought for a moment and then reached for his atlas.
"Here's a map of the Middle East.
The people who live there have been fighting for years and years.
For my one wish, I would like to bring peace to this land."
The genie, a little caught off guard, said "Oh, well, ah... that's
a little bit too much for even this old master to handle.
Aah, ya see, these people... they're involved in that touchy religious
stuff, and aah, the kids, aah, they begin fighting when they're just teenagers.
I'm afraid you're going to have to make another wish."
"Well, okay." said the musician.
"For my one wish, I would just once like to hear a pipe band play
in tune, in time, and with musical feeling."
The genie thought for a moment and replied, "Um, let me take a look
at those maps again."
