Spatiospectral processing, the key to high resolution hyperspectral imaging
Precision agriculture aims to optimize returns by automated observation of crop fields using small unmanned aerial vehicles. The challenge is to provide a complete system that combines very high spatial resolution and detailed spectral measurements to extract the information you need.

Let me tell you how a compact camera, like ButterflEYE LS, combined with our new spatiospectral processing chain allows you to image agricultural fields to analyse vegetation down to the individual plant level, while detailed spectral measurements allow early detection of vegetation stress and diseases.

Imagery: Show Me the Money
.../...
The bottom line is, imagery is a tool in the toolbox, and as such it is not designed to fix every problem faced on the farm. To maximize its usefulness, imagery must complement the many other resources farmers have at their disposal: soil type data, inputs, weather data, machine data, agronomic knowledge and many others.

As an industry, we need to collaborate to leverage our combined learning from all of these data sets.

We need to apply this data at different times based on our understanding of the farming process.

And ultimately, we need to stop providing raw data and start providing information that helps farmers make the next decision.

EU DG AGRI / JRC-MARS unit: Celebrating 25 years of agricultural resources monitoring
The JRC-MARS unit (Monitoring Agricultural ResourceS) develops methods, tools and systems to monitor agricultural evolutions (areas and yields) in Europe and the major food producing areas around the world.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, we highlight the goals and achievements of this MARS programme, and the broader role of agricultural monitoring to support global food security. Since 2000, VITO delivers remote sensing data which contribute to better crop yield forecasts.

Somewhere in Arkansas (Sorry for our friends from Arkansas!)

A gas station owner in Arkansas was trying to increase his sales.

So he put up a sign that read, "Free Sex with Fill-Up."

Soon a local redneck pulled in, filled his tank and asked for his free sex. The owner told him to pick a number from 1 to 10. If he guessed correctly he would get his free sex. The redneck guessed 8, and the proprietor said, "You were close. The number was 7. Sorry. No sex this time."

A week later, the same redneck, along with a buddy, Bubba, pulled in for another fill-up. Again he asked for his free sex. The proprietor again gave him the same story, and asked him to guess the correct number.

The redneck guessed 2 this time. The proprietor said, "Sorry, it was 3. You were close, but no free sex this time."

As they were driving away, the redneck said to his buddy, "I think that game is rigged and he doesn't really give away free sex."

Bubba replied, "No it ain't, Billy Ray. It ain't rigged. My wife won twice last week."
