AgriFood Tech Investment Surges to $10.1bn Bringing in a New Normal
…/…
Major acquisitions during 2017 changed the narrative around agtech exits, with John Deere acquiring robotics company Blue River Technology for $305 million, and DowDuPont acquiring farm management software platform Granular for $300 million. Both deals were applauded by investors and presented agrifood tech startups with a more recent model for exiting startups in the industry than Monsanto’s acquisition of Climate Corporation back in 2013.

These big deals involving big corporate ag players show the growing role of corporate investment initiatives. Syngenta Ventures was the most active strategic corporate VC in the farm tech space making five investments in 2017. Monsanto Growth Ventures, Maumee Ventures, BASF Venture Capital, Bunge Ventures, Cavallo Ventures, Taylor Farms Ventures, and Cargill also participated in deals.

Cargill to Launch Suite of Digital Tools, Considering Startup Acquisitions (October 2017)

Cargill has released the first of a suite of digital tools across its animal nutrition business — Dairy Enteligen — and is set to announce at least four more before the second half of next year, according to SriRaj Kantamneni, managing director of Cargill’s Digital Insights department.

Cargill is creating a “cloud-first technology platform” that will have different go-to-market farm management and data analysis products relevant to individual species built off it.

Animal nutrition is just one of Cargill’s five enterprises; the company at-large plans to roll out similar digital technologies across all five, including the grain origination business and food ingredients, according to Kantamneni.

Cargill Backs Livestock Vision Tech Cainthus

Cainthus, an Irish startup focused on using computer vision and predictive imaging analysis to monitor the health and well-being of livestock has received an undisclosed investment from protein giant Cargill.

Cainthus uses various types of imaging equipment to monitor livestock operations while artificial intelligence and custom algorithms detect behavior in individual animals to monitor their health and alert the user when an action is required. The Cainthus system is able to detect food and water intake in individual animals as well as when the animals are in heat and more, says founder David Hunt.

Imagery can come from drones, satellites, CCTV, and smart devices, but the most common set-up in Cainthus trials is an installation of a few dozen CCTV cameras on dairy farms.

The State of American Wages 2017

Wages have finally recovered from the blow of the Great Recession but are still growing too slowly and unequally by Elise Gould - March 1, 2018
Rising wage inequality has been a defining feature of the American economy for nearly four decades. In 2017, with an improving economy, all deciles in the overall wage distribution have improved, meaning most workers finally have higher hourly wages now than in 2007, the labor market peak before the Great Recession hit. However, large gaps by gender, race, and wage level remain, and some of these gaps are increasing.

Anti-GMO articles tied to Russian sites, ISU research shows (ISU: Iowa State University)

The former communist country is trying to influence American's attitudes about genetically engineered crops and biotechnology, according to new Iowa State University research.

Ms Murphy (Irish joke)

A sobbing Ms Murphy approaches Fr O’Grady after mass.

He says: “So what’s bothering you?”

She replies: “Oh, Father, I’ve terrible news. My husband passed away last night.”

The priest says: “Oh, Mary, that’s terrible. Did he have any last requests?”

"Certainly father," she replied. “He said: “Please Mary, put down that damn gun.”
