How to decarbonise heavy industry: From quick wins to long-term solutions

The steel industry is a major contributor to the overall CO2 emissions worldwide, and, therefore, a significant driver of climate change. The sector generated about 2 billion tons of CO2 in 2018, according to the International Energy Agency, which is double the volume of 2000.
In recent years, we have seen many initiatives - from energy efficiency (waste heat recovery) and circular economy initiatives (eg. slag treatment) to hydrogen - to decarbonise industrial processes and economic sectors where reducing carbon emissions is both urgent and hard to achieve. This includes heavy-duty and long-range transport and energy-intensive industrial processes, such as the iron and steel, chemicals, refining and cement industries.

The application differs from other tools by a few elements including the fact of sharing and openly comparing agricultural practices without ambitions of traceability or regulatory status. There is a Smarter Way to Count Citrus Trees
Yiannis Ampatzidis, a UF/IFAS Assistant Professor of agricultural and biological engineering, and his research team developed and continue to elevate a cloud-based system known as Agroview. The latest test run results show a computerized method that counted 175,977 citrus trees on a commercial citrus farm in Hendry County at nearly 98% accuracy.

On a lush, green patch of rolling farmland in Australia's Queensland, cows are quietly grazing in a scene that is replicated around the world.
A closer inspection, however, would reveal that these particular bovines are a bit more high-tech than normal.
Behind one ear, each carries a device roughly the size of a matchbox - a tamper-proof, solar-powered, satellite-connected smart "tag" that is constantly transmitting real-time data back to the farmer.
"It tells us where the animal is with GPS, and also what condition the animal is in," explains David Smith, the chief executive of Ceres Tag, the Brisbane-based firm behind the technology.

Why India’s rural development bank invested in an online butcher’s $15m fundraise, AFN, by Jack Ellis
Last month, TenderCuts — an online grocer selling high-end meat and seafood — raised $15 million funding from Mumbai-based private equity firm Paragon Partners and NABVENTURES, the VC arm of India’s state-owned National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development (NABARD).
According to the Chennai-based startup, India’s consumer market for meat is worth $100 billion; but 95% of that market is “disorganized.” In other words, the vast majority of meat and seafood in India is sold in open-air markets or at streetside stalls – often by farmers and fishermen themselves, or by small-scale ‘mom and pop’ merchants.
While this gives Indian consumers the flexibility to buy specific, ‘never-frozen’ cuts direct from vendors, it also makes the imposition, maintenance, and regulation of robust quality and hygiene standards a difficult proposition.
As India’s middle class expands — and, along with it, the country’s taste for meat — TenderCuts is bringing an alternative option to market, offering guarantees of quality, safety, and convenience in exchange for a higher price point.

What if USPS delivered local produce in the mail? (source AFN)
Farmers Post would let people sign up for cheap boxes of fresh produce from their local farms and get them delivered to their door.
A year ago, as COVID-19 spread and states asked people to shelter in place, the food system started to fall apart. With restaurants and schools closed, many farmers suddenly had no place to sell their produce and had to throw it out. Simultaneously, overrun grocery stores had empty shelves, and farmers who sold directly to consumers couldn’t keep up with demand. Grocery delivery services were overwhelmed.
Some of the challenges were temporary. But the situation also highlighted problems that existed long before the pandemic. Food waste is common on farms, partly because it isn’t always easy to find a market for excess produce—even though millions of Americans are food insecure and in need of healthful food.
At the World Wildlife Fund’s Market Institute, which looks at market trends and new business opportunities that could impact food systems, the pandemic sparked an idea: What if the U.S. Postal Service delivered boxes of affordable produce from farms to nearby homes?

Brazil’s KPTL invests in poultry management platform Agrisolus, AFN, by Lauren Manning
Brazil is the second-largest poultry producer in the world behind the US, and the top poultry exporter. Brazilian production is only expected to increase in the coming years due to heightened demand from China.
But the industry is lagging behind when it comes to adopting technology to improve operations, according to Renato Ramalho, executive partner and CEO of São Paulo-based VC firm KPTL.
“Agrisolus is the first company providing a complete solution to the entire supply chain – from the slaughterhouse to the poultry farms,” Ramalho told AFN. “There are no other startups here providing this kind of technology.”

“The decline of rural America” ???
In 2019, Time magazine said that “[t]he disappearance of the small farm will hasten the decline of rural America.” This view is fairly common today but gets a number of big things wrong. Traditional small farms trapped large numbers of Americans in deep poverty, which has been alleviated on a large scale by innovation in modern agriculture. Thanks to agricultural innovation, America’s large modern farms have learned how to grow more while using fewer inputs, helping to enrich farmers and consumers alike.
In part one of his two-part series on modern farming, Robert Paarlberg explores misconceptions about the history of American rural farms and their relationship with wealth and innovation throughout the past century. Part two, coming next week, will delve into the environmental implications of agricultural modernization.

The COVAX facility
Known as “the pharmacy of the developing world”, India is producing huge quantities of the AstraZeneca jab, under the name “Covishield”. This is the number one vaccine sent around the world under the Covax program. It brings vaccines to the EU’s closest neighbours, including Serbia and Ukraine, to name just two.
And strange as it may seem, as the EU is unable to get its AstraZeneca vaccines produced in Belgium, because they go elsewhere, it is planning to import the substitute… from India.
From an Indian perspective, at a time when the EU is unable to issue reassuring messages to its own population and to the rest of the world, the pharmacy of the developing world could just be in a position to come to the rescue.
The COVAX facility aims to distribute 2 billion doses to 92 poorer subscribing countries, but only by the end of 2021. Estimates suggest it could take up to seven years to vaccinate three-quarters of the world’s estimated 7.8 billion people. The EU and India should join forces to drastically speed up the global roll-out.

Tiger Woods joke
On a golf tour in Ireland, Tiger Woods drives his BMW into a petrol station in a remote part of the Irish countryside.
The pump attendant obviously knows nothing about golf, greets him in a typical Irish manner completely unaware of who the golfing pro is.
Top of the mornin’ to yer, sir” says the attendant.
Tiger nods a quick “hello” and bends forward to pick up the nozzle.
As he does so, two tees fall out of his shirt pocket onto the ground.
“What are dose? asks the attendant.
“They’re called tees” replies Tiger.
“Well, what on the god’s earth are dey for?” inquires the Irishman.
“They’re for resting my balls on when I’m driving”, says Tiger.
