Efita 2021 Conference

25 -26 May 2021 - Digital Agriculture Web Conference
The European Federation for Information Technology in Agriculture, Food and the Environment (EFITA) would like to invite you at the first EFITA International online Conference in 2021. As a way to keep the momentum and engagement of our society, while maintaining the plans for the 2022 physical EFITA conference, this conference and its format are planned as a response to the unpredictable situation created by the COVID-19.
This event is an opportunity to bring together engineers, scientists, technicians, aca-demics and industry people in a new way to exchange knowledge, ideas, to present innovations and to discuss the state-of-the-art and future use of ICT in the agri-food sector and bio-resources production sectors.

Sensing and Perception Systems for Situational Awareness of Agricultural Robotic Vehicles

This Special Issue invites original submissions addressing the study and development of sensing and perception systems to endow an agricultural vehicle with cognitive abilities to safely navigate and interact with its operational environment, with workers or other robots, as well as articles dealing with the study and development of novel data analysis techniques for crop assessment, recognition of condition using data acquired by agricultural robotic platforms, and any other relevant application of such technologies in crops and animal husbandry.

Papers providing experimental evidence in the field and involving the integration of different disciplines such as engineering, mathematics/statistics, occupational safety and health, human–machine interface and ergonomics, and environmental and computer science are particularly encouraged. Contributions focusing on the development of agricultural robotic technologies to achieve the United Nations sustainable development goals, such as securing healthy and sustainable food and safe working conditions and overcoming and recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic are welcome.

You can have a look at the following link for complete description of the special issue.

As you see the topics included into the special issue are quite large to accommodate manuscripts on sensors, remote sensing, robotics, health and safety and many related subjects.

I (GW) recently had to present myself…

Guy Waksman is 70 years old. He is a member of the French Agricultural Academy, created in 1761 by the king Louis XV. Today, the Academy gathers 120 members, 180 corresponding members from France and 60 members and 60 corresponding members coming from 38 countries.

Among most well-known members : Buffon, Lavoisier, Pasteur, Berthelot… and the American Selman Waksman (1888-1973), soil science specialist, who got the Nobel price of medicine for the invention of the streptomycin, the second antibiotic after the penicillin discovered by Fleming. Note that there is no family link between the great Selman Waksman and Guy!

Guy Waksman graduated as Ag Engineer in Montpellier in 1973. He started his career in Canada in Forestry, then in France working on the use of satellite images for agriculture at first and then to meet cartographic needs in lands that had no maps suitable for mine and oil prospection. For 30 years he worked for the French Ag Institutes as head of ACTA Informatique, a small IT company involved in a number of R&D projects subsidized within French and EU R&D projects.

Guy Waksman has been President of AFIA (Association Francophone d’Informatique Agricole) and of EFITA (European Federation for Information Technology in Agriculture and Environment”.

Guy Waksman was for many years expert for the evaluation of R&D projects in his area of competences. Since 1997, he is editing two weekly newsletters, one in French, the other in English about ICT in Agriculture, available on the informatique-agricole.org web site where you can subscribe these newsletters.

Guy Waksman is member of the section “Agrobusiness and non-food products” within the Ag Academy, Information and Communication Technologies being considered as a new ag input / production factor like seeds and plants, fertilizers, machines…

To be a member of this Academy is an honor and a chance to meet many interesting people, to participate in working groups, to establish links with other Academies. For example, Guy Waksman participated in a working group, during the first lockdown, organized by the Academy of technologies on the role and the impact of Information and Communication Technologies during the Covid crisis in areas such as schools and universities, health services, commerce… and agriculture.

This is the reason why, together with JM Séronie and Ph.Gate, he wrote a chapter on this subject in the last book published by the Ag Academy about “Agriculture and Covid-19”.

The ATLAS research project / Invitation

ATLAS “Agricultural Interoperability and Analysis System” is a Horizon 2020 research project that aims to achieve a new level of interoperability of agricultural machines, sensors and data services and enable farmers to have full control over their data and decide which data is shared with whom in which place.

The overall objective of ATLAS is the development of an open digital Interoperability Network service for agricultural applications and to build up a sustainable ecosystem for innovative data-driven agriculture using the Network.

The Interoperability Network will allow the flexible combination of agricultural machinery, sensor systems and data analysis tools to overcome the problem of lacking interoperability and will enable farmers to increase their productivity in a sustainable way by making use of the most advanced digital technology and data.
It will also define a service architecture, providing hardware and software interoperability layers which enable the acquisition and sharing of data from a multitude of sensors and the analysis of this data using a multitude of dedicated analysis approaches.

The benefits of data driven agriculture will be demonstrated using the ATLAS Interoperability Network within a multitude of pilot studies. Around these pilot studies, so called “Innovation Hubs”, a network of end-users, service providers, researchers and policy makers along the agricultural value chain, will be established to exploit the benefits of digital agriculture to a larger audience.

Innovative companies will be attracted through seed funding to provide their services through the Network. With the knowledge created from these pilot studies, ATLAS will put significant effort into the definition of the next generation standards for data driven agriculture. ATLAS consortium involves 30 partners from leading research institutions, companies and agricultural organizations of Europe.

We invite you to join our Network of Interest in order to build a dynamic group of stakeholders that will lead to enhanced awareness on the topic.

Our members will receive the ATLAS newsletter and exclusive information about the project progress so that they are constantly kept up to date.

You are also invited and encouraged to take part in webinars, technical meetings and scientific discussions that will take place throughout the project.

We kindly ask you to support our efforts and the ATLAS team will be happy to have you on board!

“Europe’s Energy: a victim of clerical betrayal?” Interview with B. Durand and J.P. Riou

Bernard Durand and Jean Pierre Riou, energy experts and authors of numerous articles in our columns, have just written “The treason of the clerics”, a voluminous working document on the perverse effects of the development of intermittent renewable electricity (iREl), which in Europe consist notably of wind power and photovoltaics. This 107-page document, accompanied by 30 pages of notes and references, aims to bring together the best sources to highlight the contradictions and dead ends of the various aspects of European energy policy. The two authors answer our questions here.
