Pinduoduo, China’s largest agriculture platform connecting 16 million farmers to over 800 million users, is organizing its second Smart Agriculture Competition, which will run from Aug 2021 to Apr 2022. The competition is open to all agronomists and computer scientists from around the world and has a total prize pool of more than $150,000.
Last year’s competition demonstrated how automation and IoT technologies combined could help farmers grow strawberries with 76% higher ROI, yielding more fruit with less labour and targete inputs. One of the winning teams has developed a business model which has proven to be profitable. This year’s competition will challenge the world’s best agri-tech research teams to fuse cutting-edge technology and sustainable growing practices to produce high-quality tomatoes that are nutritious and environmentally sustainable.
The teams will receive guidance from our global line-up of experts from the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, Wageningen University, China Agricultural University and Zhejiang University. Finalists will also have the chance to demonstrate their technology in smart greenhouses using equipment sponsored by Bayer, Omron and Ridder.
The winning team will receive research funding from the Pinduoduo Agritech Research Fund as well as implementation support at a Duo Duo Farm in Yunnan alongside further academic and commercial support.

Cultivating rice with drip irrigation uses 70% less water and 90% less methane emissions
Rice sustains 3.5 billion people worldwide but it is also the most water-dependent crop on the planet and is grown at an enormous cost to the environment. Responsible for 10% of manmade methane emissions, traditional rice farming requires 5,000 litres of water to produce just one kilo, and uses a staggering 30-40% of the world’s freshwater supply.
India alone produces 200M metric tons of rice and as its population increases, demand is expected to rise 25% by 2050.
Netafim’s drip irrigation technology out-produces conventional paddy rice farming, uses 70% less water, and diminishes methane emissions to almost zero, combating water scarcity and climate change. Leveraging drip irrigation for rice, farmers are able to mitigate food insecurity and sustain its production.

AFN‘s parent company AgFunder released the latest edition of its annual Farm Tech Investment Report earlier this month, which showed that funding for agritech startups saw its biggest increase since 2018.
FY 2020 global investment into the segment totaled a projected $7.9 billion, representing a whopping 41% increase from the previous year.
CropX acquires Dacom in continued agtech rollup, AFN, by Lauren Manning
Israeli ag analytics firm CropX has completed its third acquisition as part of its ongoing rollup of agrifoodtech startups. Its latest purchase is Dutch platform Dacom Farm Intelligence. Dacom brings 3,000 customers to CropX’s ledger as well as 20,000 farms in over 40 countries.
With the acquisition, CropX plans to establish a Europe office at Dacom’s headquarters in Emmen, the Netherlands.
The startup ticks several of CropX’s M&A boxes, according to the Israeli firm’s president John Vikupitz. The criteria that it looks for include being well-respected in local markets, having a strong management team that intends to stay with CropX, and complementary technology that delivers additional insights to the producer in the field.
As a leader in field and financial solutions, EFC Systems is focused on improving farm profitability and the operational efficiencies of retailers. Through E.R.P. and field data management solutions, retailers and growers will have the tools needed to enhance their digital interaction and use data to make more informed decisions.
Strengthening Ag Retail Customer Relationships
Currently, ag retailers work through a range of different communication and sales channels with growers; a visit from the agronomist, an email with offers from the local store or a call to chase up the status of an order. The disparate nature of these channels leads to a disjointed customer experience for growers and ultimately means that sales opportunities fall through the cracks for ag retailers. Ag retail is increasingly exploring options to go online, but is yet to define a clear strategy against the backdrop of unconnected back-end systems and online-only marketplaces.

John Deere has announced it has signed an agreement to purchase Bear Flag Robotics for $250 million. Founded in 2017, Bear Flag Robotics develops autonomous driving technology that is compatible with existing machines.

Smallholders produce one-third of the world’s food, less than half of what many headlines claim, by Hannah Ritchie
They find that family farms produce around 80% of the world’s food. To be clear: small farms produce one-third of the world’s food. Family farms – of any size – produce 80%. These terms should not be used interchangeably because they are very different.
Increasing the productivity of smallholder farming is a crucial step in countries transitioning from poverty to middle-incomes. Raising the output and incomes of smallholder farmers should be an important focus, even if they produced very little of the world’s food. This is because most of the world’s farms are smallholders, and they are some of the poorest people in the world.
We should avoid the romanticization of a future where most still spend their time working the fields for small returns. That would be a future where hundreds of millions continue to live in poverty.

Global Assessment of Soil Pollution
Soil pollution is a chemical degradation process that consumes fertile soils, with implications for global food security and human health. Soil pollution hampers the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including achieving zero hunger, ending poverty, ensuring healthy lives and human well-being, halting and reversing land degradation and biodiversity loss, and making cities safe and resilient.
