The European Federation for Information Technology in Agriculture, Food and the Environment (EFITA) would like to invite you at the first EFITA International online Conference in 2021. As a way to keep the momentum and engagement of our society, while maintaining the plans for the 2022 physical EFITA conference, this conference and its format are planned as a response to the unpredictable situation created by the COVID-19.
This event is an opportunity to bring together engineers, scientists, technicians, aca-demics and industry people in a new way to exchange knowledge, ideas, to present innovations and to discuss the state-of-the-art and future use of ICT in the agri-food sector and bio-resources production sectors.

Farm software startup Agrivi raises $4.8m for major
expansion, AFN, by Lauren Stine
Farm management platform Agrivi has raised a €4 million
($4.8 million) round from South Central Ventures,
the European Investment Fund, and the Croatian Bank
for Reconstruction and Development.
AgriTech Hub and Fil Rogue Capital also participated
in the round.
Launched in 2013, the software-as-a-service company
aims to help users make their crop operations more
efficient. It claims that its platform is used in
100 countries, with Europe and North America providing
the bulk of users.
Farmers can use Agrivi’s platform to manage anything
from “creating a crop plan and budget for the season,
making weekly or daily plans based on actionable insights
from the field, monitoring field operations, tracking
farm expenses and sales, [to] understanding the unit
cost and profit per field to ensure the full crop
production traceability,” said CEO and founder Matija
Zulj.
“There are many more processes the platform supports,
but full crop production lifecycle management is the
core focus,” he told AFN.

Agritech continues to transform the future of food security in Africa, Microsoft, seen in AgFunder Weekly

Microsoft has been partnering with public and private organisations to develop systems that support better policy making around agriculture. One example of this is the organistions work with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperatives (MALFC) in Kenya to bring state of the art technology to their farming communities.
On an international scale, Microsofts Global Entrepreneurship Programme is supporting the most capable agritech start-ups from around the world. In helping small-scale farmers create economic identities for themselves, access profitable markets and limit damage to their crops, it is rallying together in an effort to get another step closer to fulfilling Africa’s agricultural promise.

Concerns about the pandemic and the necessity of maintaining our food supply chains have pushed many businesses in these industries to increase their investments in automating or artificial intelligence technologies. In many cases, this is just an acceleration of preexisting trends. Tyson Foods, producer of roughly 20 percent of US produced chicken, beef, and pork, invested more than 500 million in automation and related technological advancements in the last three years alone.
Of course, given that agriculture, food, and related industries employ a significant fraction of the workforce (10.9 percent of U.S. employment), movement toward automating technologies may be alarming to some. It is important to recognize, however, that the net effect of labor displacement depends on the nature of the new technology. It is instructive to survey which automating technologies are being adopted at different points of the food supply chain to better understand their impacts on this sector.
The industrial agriculture and food (agri-food) industry is responsible for feeding the US and many of its trading partners. In a push towards greater efficiency and scale to meet the needs of the future, industry leaders have invested in robotics and automating technologies. Some key areas of development include automated irrigation, fertilizer, harvesting, and breeding systems. These process improvements are aimed at reducing production costs and conserving water, fuel, and fertilizer.
Many of these technologies are not only efficient, they are labor replacing. Spurred in part by the shortage of workers to pick fruit, some large commercial firms have employed harvesting robots that can cover the acreage of multiple workers. Given the impact of COVID–19 on borders and worker flows into and across the US, many firms have strong incentive to continue to invest in these technologies, further reducing the need for human labor. The advent of driverless tractors and sprayers will further reduce the need for large day-to-day staffs.

Spotify’s early investors have just raised Europe’s largest agritech fund, Sifted, by Connor Bilboe, seen in AgFunder Weekly
The fund will focus on European and American startups in agriculture, food and oceantech. How will it shake up the $14bn agritech market?
Belgium-based venture capital firm Astanor Ventures today announced the launch of its $325m fund dedicated to agriculture and food, Europe’s largest fund of its kind to date.
The fund is the VC’s first and will focus on startups in Europe and North America working towards their Series A-C rounds in agriculture, food and oceantech, with a particular consideration towards health and nature.

Is this the beginning of an mRNA vaccine revolution? By Adam Finn, professor of paediatrics at the Bristol Children’s Vaccine Centre, University of Bristol
Whether or not mRNA now becomes the preferred way to make novel vaccines, it is clear that a global disaster on the scale of the pandemic spurs innovation at a much faster rate. This is not just the consequence of all the resources and funding made available to those with solutions that might usually be regarded with more scepticism; it is also driven by the remarkable things that humans can achieve when thrust together by circumstances and given a common purpose. While we like to lionise individual heroes and leaders, scientific advances like mRNA vaccines are always the product of the collaborative efforts of many people with diverse skills and backgrounds. Bringing vaccines to the clinic also requires large numbers of brave and altruistic volunteers to take part in clinical trials.
Stepping back, one fact stands out. At the beginning of November, we still did not know whether or not any vaccine would be able to help us overcome this terrible disease. As the month draws to its close, we’re certain that they can. However mRNA vaccines go down in the history books, that in itself is something to marvel at. Human ingenuity, invention and sheer hard work mean we are finally on the road out of this disaster.
