The European Federation for Information Technology in Agriculture, Food and the Environment (EFITA) would like to invite you at the first EFITA International online Conference in 2021. As a way to keep the momentum and engagement of our society, while maintaining the plans for the 2022 physical EFITA conference, this conference and its format are planned as a response to the unpredictable situation created by the COVID-19.

This event is an opportunity to bring together engineers, scientists, technicians, aca-demics and industry people in a new way to exchange knowledge, ideas, to present innovations and to discuss the state-of-the-art and future use of ICT in the agri-food sector and bio-resources production sectors.

Precision AI raises $20 million to reduce chemical footprint of agriculture

Precision AI announced the closing of $20 million in equity and grant funding to support its drone technology to reduce herbicide use in row crop agriculture
Precision AI's drone-based computer vision technology enables surgically precise application of herbicide to individual weeds in row crop farming. By spraying only weeds and avoiding the crop, yields can be maintained at a fraction of the chemical cost. Ultimately, the company's vision is to deploy hives of intelligent drones that will automate the crop protection process throughout the entire growing season, optimizing every square inch of farmland on a per-plant basis.

Inari aims to make food production more sustainable, using gene-edited seeds to enhance crop yield while requiring less fertilizer and water. The funding will be used to accelerate development of its existing corn and soybean platform; expand into new crops, such as wheat; and grow in markets outside North and South America, Inari CEO Ponsi Trivisvavet said in an interview.

“We have tested our products in greenhouses and in the field, and look forward to bringing it to the hands of farmers in a couple of years,” she said.

Valmont acquires crop analytics startup Prospera for $300m, by Lauren Manning (AFN)

US irrigation equipment and services company Valmont Industries has acquired Israeli crop analytics startup Prospera for $300 million. The partners claim that they now operate the largest vertically integrated AI company in agriculture, which focuses on digitizing center pivot irrigation systems.

The duo first began working together two years ago after Valmont saw how Prospera’s technology was working in Idaho.

Apeel Sciences acquires ImpactVision to look inside fruit & veg for freshness, AFN, by Louisa Burwood-Taylor

Apeel Sciences, the food waste technology company, has acquired hyperspectral imaging startup ImpactVision. This is Apeel’s first acquisition, and the Santa Barbara-based company says it stands to dramatically reduce the 40% of produce that’s wasted globally each year.

Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

Apeel is known for its plant-based ‘peel’ product which can be applied to the outside of fruits and vegetables, doubling their shelf life.

San Francisco-based ImpactVision’s imaging tech will allow suppliers to see ‘inside’ their fresh produce to better understand its ripeness, freshness, nutritional density, and other indicators of quality. This could allow suppliers to know the exact ripening window for each individual fruit and vegetable, enabling them to sort and ship accordingly.

Farm Babe: Has agriculture won the battle over GMOs?

Differences about what to eat are fine, but spreading misinformation, as was done by activists in the battle over GMOs, isn’t a good long-term strategy.
It’s nice to see the anti-GMO movement slow down a bit where science may prevail. This article talks about the money trail behind their misinformed movement, but these special interest groups have certainly started to realize that lies and slander against their competitors will get them nowhere in the long run. May science continue to be heard in its humanitarian efforts.

Bee Careful: Walmart is Telling Farmers How to Farm

Walmart announced that its fresh produce suppliers are going to face some new requirements aimed at protecting bee populations. The mega-retailer invoked images of a world without orange juice, strawberry salads, and apple pie in a press release detailing the coming changes. It stresses that all of us will have to pitch in so we don’t see a world without bees.

Walmart is making two big asks from its producers. First, it’s encouraging fresh produce suppliers to “protect, restore, or establish pollinator habitats by 2025 on at least 3% of land they own. . .and report annual progress.” It’s also requiring its producers to develop an Integrated Pest Management system certified by a third-party. And they’re encouraging suppliers to phase out certain neonictinoids pesticides.

The whole thing has me rolling my eyes. There’s nothing inherently wrong with wanting to protect pollinators. In fact, bees are a big deal to farmers; without them many of our crops wouldn’t grow. Like everyone else, we also like to eat those crops, which are important for a well-balanced diet. So a world without bees would be catastrophic for everyone, including those in agriculture.
Listen, I’m all about environmental stewardship. Society has long ignored just how important bees are to our modern way of life. I’m glad people are paying attention. And there’s certainly things we can all do to support good pollinator health, like using flowering plants in our landscaping. What I have a problem with is Walmart placing the blame on farmers without any evidence that this new initiative is anything but fruitless. Meanwhile, there’s probably plenty of things Walmart itself could do to be kinder to the Earth.

This goes back to a larger point I’ve always tried to make. If you’re concerned about bees, climate change, clean water, or clean air, farmers are the solution not the culprit.

Ten million reasons to vaccinate the world

Our model reveals the true course of the pandemic. Here is what to do next.

This week we are publishing our estimate of the true death toll from covid-19. Using known data on 121 variables, from recorded deaths to demography, we have built a pattern of correlations that lets us fill in gaps where numbers are lacking. Our central estimate is that 10m people have died who would otherwise be living—more than three times the recorded number. Official figures suggest that the pandemic has struck in waves, and that the rich countries have been hit hard, while much of the developing world has seemed to get off lightly. But the overwhelming majority of the 6.7m or so deaths that nobody has counted have been in poor and middle-income countries. The virus has spread remorselessly from rich countries to poorer ones—and it is still doing so. Our findings contain an urgent warning. Unless vaccines go global, the tragic scenes now unfolding in India risk being repeated elsewhere. Millions more will die.

China’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions Exceeded the Developed World for the First Time in 2019

Each year Rhodium Group provides the most up-to-date global and country-level greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions estimates through the ClimateDeck (a partnership with Breakthrough Energy). In addition to our preliminary US and China GHG estimates for 2020, Rhodium provides annual estimates of economy-wide emissions—including all six Kyoto gases—for over 190 countries from 1990-2019. Using our newly updated global emissions data through 2019, we estimate that in 2019, for the first time since national greenhouse gas emissions have been measured, China’s annual emissions exceeded those of all developed countries combined. China’s emissions were less than a quarter of developed country emissions in 1990, but over the past three decades have more than tripled, reaching over 14 gigatons of CO2-equivalent in 2019.

All energy sources have negative effects. But they differ enormously in size: as we will see, in all three aspects, fossil fuels are the dirtiest and most dangerous, while nuclear and modern renewable energy sources are vastly safer and cleaner.

From the perspective of both human health and climate change, it matters less whether we transition to nuclear power or renewable energy, and more that we stop relying on fossil fuels.
